Serena Williams’ run at Roland Garros was surprisingly short-lived.
Williams lost in stunning fashion in the Round of 32 on Saturday, falling in straight sets to 20-year-old American Sofia Kenin.
Kenin, who won 6-2, 7-5, will face Ashleigh Barty of Australia in the Round of 16, looking to build on what is already her best performance at a major.
The loss marks Williams’ earliest exit at a Grand Slam event since 2014, when she was bounced in the Round of 32 at Wimbledon. The 37-year-old Williams, who has won 23 majors over the course of her legendary career, reached the Round of 16 last year at Roland Garros. She has won the tournament three times, most recently in 2015.
Naomi Osaka, the top-ranked player in the world, was also eliminated Saturday, losing to Kateřina Siniaková.
